Trinity Eluded

This is Not a manip!
This involved two golf balls, a camera, a tripod, a flashgun, a lens cap, lots of manual focusing settings and fiddling around in the dark. The idea is something I had in my head for a while and definitely plan to expand on further in the near future. Basically, I wanted to have two (or more) planes of focus in a single shot, without messing around in Photoshop at all. In order to achieve this I did the following:

-Manually focused on the front golf ball, with the middle ball out of focus.
-Switched off the lights and started a 30 second exposure.
-Manually fired the flash gun at the ceiling at 1/16 power
-Covered the lens, switched lights back on
-Removed front golf ball, moved middle ball to the rear, and adjusted focus accordingly.
-Switched off the lights, removed lens cap and fired flash at the ceiling again.
-Breathed out quietly with five seconds to spare

Please let me know if you've seen something similar in the past, as I (in my very limited knowledge of what is out there) consider this to be an original idea. If you try something along the same lines, let me know, I would love to see it, and mention me in passing!
